S.T.E.A.M. STORY TIME, THURSDAYS 5:30PM

For children of all ages and their families.

June 18th – Native Plants at the Library!

Join Ms. Teresa for a story and a brief presentation about how native plants can transform your yard into a welcoming habitat for birds, butterflies, bees, and other wildlife. Learn about the benefits of native plants and why they are important for wildlife, pollinators, and our local environment. Explore hands-on experiments and activities set up throughout the library.

Thanks to the Hawthorn Chapter of the Missouri Native Plant Society, 50 native plants will be given away to participating families while supplies last.

June 25th – Letโ€™s Talk Scales!

Ethan Regan from the Missouri Department of Conservation will be here to teach us all about reptiles.

Did you know? Reptiles evolved from salamander-like creatures about 315 million years ago. Unlike amphibians, reptiles do not have to live part of their life in water. Early reptiles were the first vertebrates to produce shelled eggs that protected their eggs from drying as they developed. This helps reptiles live in dry habitats where amphibians can not survive.

Missouri has 74 species of reptiles: 18 different turtles, 11 native lizards, 2 nonnative lizards, and 43 different species and subspecies of snakes. Only five Missouri snake species are venomous to people. Most are shy and normally avoid people.

STEAM Story Times are free to attend and open to children of all ages and their families. STEAM stands for Science, Tech, Engineering, Art, and Math. Our goal is to promote literacy, critical thinking, creativity and teamwork.

Our weekly STEAM based story times have been gaining popularity among kids and parents. Along with a book, children enjoy a fun hands-on activity using simple materials. Whether it be experimenting with magnetic slime, flying rocket balloons, or building bubble forts, kids create memorable experiences.

This project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provision of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
