Tomorrow we recognize Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating June 19, 1865—the day enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

The Juneteenth flag is rich with symbolism. Its red, white, and blue colors remind us that Black Americans are an essential part of the American story. The white star represents Texas, where Juneteenth began, and the freedom of African Americans across the nation. The bursting star symbolizes a new beginning, while the curved horizon represents hope, opportunity, and progress toward a more just future.

Juneteenth is both a celebration of freedom and a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of equality. We invite you to take a moment today to reflect on this important chapter of American history.
